Jo Ann's haul #2

So I couldn't help myself & went back to Jo Ann's yesterday. I was supposed to buy some Kona solid white there but I couldn't resist the sale and I could get it with a 50% off coupon this week. I went to a different store & they had the patterns on my list that I still wanted and the 1 inch bias tape maker I couldn't find at the other store

I also bought elastic for skirts, on clearance, a cute pirate remnant, 4 stamp pads for 50 cents each, a zipper for the fleece sweater I didn't make last fall because I bought the wrong zipper, and cheap sew in interfacing. The red stuff is strapping for the bottom of some jeans I needed to hem but turned into a disaster. It didn't match as well as I thought it would so I'll use it for something else. The other thing I picked up was sewing needles for piecing the Apple Cores (I think I like the name Double Axe better). The pirate remnant is going to be made into an apron with the pattern above for my son and husband to wear. My current apron is girly, though I've still got a picture of my son in it :oD

We also went to the thrift store where I picked up this bag for holding the Double Axe pieces as a take along project:

I find it odd that the carry handle is on top and it unzips on the opposite side. This was the second one in the bin in this style. I wonder what it was used for? We've taken up thrift/resale store shopping since about summer last year and it pays off! My daughter is the perfect size and always finds an incredible buy. She's bought $300 silk shirts for $3, a lovely long black cashmere/wool coat for $10 and tons of clothes for cheap. I've even found plus size, brand new jeans for $5 though the deals for me don't come up as often. This weekend she was looking for buttons to change a too big garage sale silk vest into a double breasted one. She bought 3 ugly dresses for under $5 with a total of 33 buttons, about 1/3 natural shell and the rest "gold". The best thing is that the money goes to local organizations like Habitat for Humanity. I also bought one more thing for a craft I'm going to make and post hopefully next week. My quilt is coming along well so I might try to finish that instead.

  2. Tee hee - you sound like me when I go to JoAnns. My husband cringes when I say I'm going to JoAnns. :) There's always something on sale or a coupon I have to use.

  3. I wish I had a JoAnns near me, but I make do quite well with Hobby Lobby and Michaels. A couple of weeks ago they had patterns on sale for 99 cents so I bought a few!!!

  4. I love Hobby Lobby too! I think, for the most part, the quality of their fabrics is better. Michaels' sewing supplies are sometimes cheaper, probably because they aren't centered around them. Jo Ann's just happens to be in the same shopping center I work in.

The quilt with two names

I've known about this quilt forever. I originally read about it on the Quilting Board way before I'd seen the Jelly Roll Race or the 1600 inch quilt. You can find the original post here: http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutorials-f10/super-fast-jelly-roll-quilt-t44258.html   I recommend you wade through it because there are a lot of nice examples. On page 7 is a picture tutorial and somewhere in there is a discussion of making different sizes and using different widths. She used to have a PDF printout for free but you could just print the first page.  Anyways, I used my JoAnn's, 20 strip jelly roll to try this out.  I wanted to also separate the strips by piecing squares in between them. I really like that look for this quilt so I chose a crazy scrap I had laying around and cut twenty 2 1/2 inch squares. The jelly roll had only ten different fabrics, 2 strips of each, so I pieced squares on one end of each strip. I should clarify, you need to piece strips of
